I�ve made massive use over several decades of the original 200 Last Verses. I�ve been meaning for ages to buy the follow up volume.
The first volume is a wonderful resource for anyone who accompanies hymns. If your singers are all treble line singers, you can occasionally get a nice effect by using one of No�l Rawsthorne's harmonies for a middle verse, then back to the hymn book for the last.
The versions are interesting without being overcomplicated. A bit of practice helps especially (in my case, if you want to use the pedals) but you don�t have to spend all week on it.
So many of the most often used hymns are in the first volume that you may not immediately find many from book two to play in the average service. But it�s a pleasure to play through so many fine tunes. A favourite, among many others, that I haven�t heard for years was Kelvingrove.
